The Tenth Stage

A combination of Steampunk and Dark cabaret, unlike anything you've heard before.

Take a stroll back in time to a place where debauchery, hedonism, murder and lust were the spice of life. From gothic-inspired murder ballads, darkwave blues rhythms and reggae infused electronica, this album covers a wide range of musical styles.

Various artists from around the globe have performed on this album, including Ian Burden (The Human League), Angelspit, IKON, Suspiria, Opera Macabre, Rowena Martin and many more.

    The Tenth Stage

The Tenth Stage - live at EUCHRONIA New Years Eve 2008

The Tenth Stage - Live at Euchronia - a Steampunk Neo-Victorian end of year ballEuchronia is a steampunk / neo-Victorian Year's End Ball taking place in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on the last day of the calendar year of 2008. The event officially opens for general admission at 9pm and proceedings will continue 'til the early hours of the following morning. Our venue is the fabulous and anachronistic Victorian Trades Hall, an historic Victorian Era building at the edge of the Melbourne CBD which features a perfect blend of history and realism to delight the neo-Victorian enthusiast.

"Euchronia" is a play on words, in this form taken from the Greek "eu", meaning "good", and "chronos", "time". Time is a central theme of the event, and you may notice things not quite as they should appear in a twenty-first century ball. If you look carefully at the details, you may see evidence of some rather astounding happenings occurring during the evening. The pronunciation of Euchronia is identical to "Uchronia" [which means "no time"], but the event should not be confused with the fantastic art structure by that name created at Burning Man in 2006.

Euchronia will feature three separate sound-spaces, each with a different musical focus. The New Ballroom will feature a mix of new romantic, gothic fusion, industrial, retro, futuristic, electro and EBM music. The Bella Union Bar will host The Tenth Stage as well as DJs. Finally, our third sound space The Annex is a designated relaxation space with a more ambient and layed-back soundscape.

Live: The Tenth Stage, Sforzando and Dandelion Wine
DJs: Lobotomy, Gus Exposition, Mixmaster Malice, Nettie, Tigerlily, Viscera, Omega
Performances: Rosy Rabbit [burlesque], Alex de Rambelje [cabaret magic], SerpentSkirt [Raqs Gothique], Tank the Muppet [risque circus], The Tanquerays [burlesque], Ebenezer Schadenfreude [Master of Ceremonies]

Grand Guignol CD review by Swedish Website 'synth.nu'

The awesome website SYNTH.NU has reviewed Grand Guignol giving it an 8/10 rating.
    Kind thanks to Benjamin Kristiansen.

Here is a rough English translation

In terms of a whole Grand Guignol - despite its madness - is an album filled with strong songs. Although the text deals with topics that are not so encouraging, you can not get away from the fact that the album is bursting with joy.

    Rating: 8

Welcome to the madness! May I introduce Mr Roberto Massaglia and John Von Ahlen from Australia. This duo is the band The Tenth Stage. On the cover the curtain went up and the two men standing there with the hat, evening dress, the cigar and a glass of absinthe and welcome you into madness. The cover gives me a feeling that this is a circus or cabaret. The first track begins with a voice leads you into The Tenth Stage world. Here you meet the tales involving creepy units and other nasty stuff. All packed with a great deal of humor to be said if I understand it right.

Musically, it sounds as synthpop and classical pop crossed with cabaret music. The melodies are there, and based on the classic melody making. Madness reminiscent of Lola Angst, but the similarities end there. Where Lola Angst makes danceable madness The Tenth Stage make music for the preparty or the pub. At The Tenth Stages myspace page they classified themselves as gothic or alternative. May well be that texts can be considered as Gothic, but musically, this is all too happy music to cheer with a sad and depressive Goth. Grand Guignol is consistently high standard in terms of actual songs. Personally, I am weak for the madness and fall for it because of the genuine melody making. Then you can call this music what you want. The music is in a way "ASEXUAL." It is difficult to know which groups who are attracted by the music.

My favorite song is "Cinderella's Revenge" in which references to the beginning of last century and circus music is clear, while the chorus is wonderful pop. "Eldorado" is made to sing with in a pub or so. "One Eyed Lisa" is a wonderful pop of the best varieties. Honorable Mention to "Send My Regards To Hell" and "The March" which sounds a bit like trip-hop in my ears.

In terms of a whole Grand Guignol - despite its madness - is an album filled with strong songs. Although the text deals with topics that are not so encouraging, you can not get away from the fact that the album is bursting with joy. Anyone who just likes dark music will be disappointed. Would you, however, have some wonderful madness, you've found right.

Grand Guignol - Russian Review of CD

Our second album, Grand Guignol, has been reviewed on this russian blog.
    But we can't read it!
We did a quick translation and it mentioned something about the land of kangaroos, so if any readers out there can translate it for us - please get in touch.

In the meantime we are confident it reads something like this....
"Millions of Russian Fans of The Tenth Stage stormed the Kremlin today in protest against the Grand Guignol CD being out of stock. The riots squads were called in, and tear gas was launched onto a crowd of several thousand people chanting 'The Tenth Stage Forever, Capitalismus Never!!'

    Or perhaps not....

    The Tenth Stage

New Album : The Tenth Stage - Grand Guignol

THE TENTH STAGE - GRAND GUIGNOLThe Tenth Stage's new album
    'GRAND GUIGNOL'
    is now available from Surgeon-X.com!

Following on from their eponymous debut album The Tenth Stage , the band have crafted a new monster creation in the form of their brand new second album Grand Guignol.
After a year of touring and refining their unique visual performances, the band have emerged from the studio with a truly unique album.
This second installment in the series of Murder, Lust and Depravity now crash lands in the middle of the 19th century, going even further backin time than their debut album.
A new assortment of aural pleasures awaits within, with a newer orchestral sound being explored, while still maintaining the clinical precision that only Analog and Digital Synthesiers can deliver.
Roberto and John have filled the album with a parade of guest musicians, in order to bring life to their distorted and twisted visions.

Take a stroll down memory lane with The Tenth Stage and visit the killing fields of Tyburn Hill in Olde-England (Requiem For Molly) or visit a vampire occupied 'German Grey Shirts' drinking bar (El Dorado).
Occasionally the time machine jumps into the 21st Century and pays a visit to disgusting beasts such as Ed Gein (Sex Is Bad Eddie), but before long you are transported back in time to the good olde days of swift justice and public hangings.

Grand Guignol is not for the faint hearted, but those of a more refined disposition will still appreciate the multi layered vocals and delicate instrumentation of the finely crafted songs contained within.
